Community Academy of Philadelphia is a K-12 Charter School located in Northeast Philadelphia. The school engaged GKO Architects to renovate an adjacent 10,000-square-foot restaurant building into educational spaces. The spatial needs of a restaurant are obviously quite different from the needs of an educational facility, and the school had a limited budget; therefore, GKO Architects maintained as many existing walls and window openings as possible while still meeting all functional requirements. Colors and materials used in the renovation complement the existing charter school and serve to create a “campus” feeling on the combined property.
